The Angels Wept

I am still speechless in the wake of last night’s tragedy at Notre Dame de Paris. As a child, I remember hearing that rain was the angels weeping. I think this image from a childhood favorite conveys the feelings of most of the world this morning.

Ludwig Bemelmans, Madeline “In Rain” (1939)

In this time of sadness, it bears remembering the motto of the City of Paris, “Fluctuat nec murgitur” — “[She] is tossed [by the waves] but does not sink.”
