Lovely people! The Armory Show is the signature international contemporary art fair of the year in New York City. Like so many others in 2020, the Armory Show went fully remote last year, only exhibiting their many international art galleries online only. But the fair is back in 2021!
I tried to showcase as many art galleries and artists as possible in this video. Feel free to pause the video whenever you like to stop and stare!
The Armory Show was in the Javitz Center this year, a move away from their normal spot at the piers on the Hudson. This new venue offered more space for physical distancing in light of public health concerns. You get the idea.
What will you see at this visual arts fair? The fine arts, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, conceptual art, you name it! If you are not familiar with the Armory Show, you can checkout a previous video I made for the last in-person fair in 2019 right up here. In there, I go into more depth about the history of the fair from it’s inception in 1913 to it’s contemporary transformation. The Armory Show features an international smorgasborg of contemporary art galleries—over 100 in fact. They are showcasing artwork made by the artists whom they represent. If you are an art dealer or an art collector, this is a exciting opportunity to move product, collect some nice new pieces for your collection, and sweeten up your digs. For visual artists, this is a fun four-day weekend to not only promote your art, but also meet-and-greet art friends in the community.
The Armory Show is typically in March, when we’re all still thawing out from the cold New York winters. Well a by-product of the pandemic is that the fair moved to September, a seasonal change that I hope the show organizers stick with going forward. September is usually a big month for art gallery openings in New York, and it’s my birthday month, so it only seems auspicious and prudent to keep the show at this time. Shout out to all the virgos out there!
Although there are so many wonderful artists and art galleries to highlight, I selected only a handful in the video that I will bring to your attention in the links below. We don’t have all day!
