The collections of decorative arts and sculpture at the Getty Museum reflect the close relationship of art and design in Europe from the medieval period to the 19th century. Sculptors often shared designs or collaborated with artists working in other media, such as wood, precious metal, bronze, terracotta, marble and stone, and many decorative-arts designers might also have been trained as sculptors. Another unifying motif of these collections is the visual language of classical art; this is especially appropriate for a Museum based on the collection of J. Paul Getty, who had such a love of classical art and civilization.
